What It Is
The area around the John Dunn Brudge over the Río Grande west of Arroyo Hondo is a popular recreation area that is now part of the Río Grande del Norte National Monument. The area is popular with rock climbers, hot spring enthusiasts (the Black Rock hot springs are up the gorge just a little ways past the bridge) and with those just looking to cool off in the relatively calmer portion of the river.
Why It’s Special
“A ‘wild art’ photo-request to document water recreation brought me to the historic Hondo Bridge on a hot afternoon last June. To my amazement a cluster of rafters passed under the bridge just as I was walking across it with camera in hand.” — Tina Larkin, staff photographer at The Taos News
