Quaint, historic or luxe — the high desert means hospitality
By Kika Vargas
Desert cultures are known to offer refuge and hospitality to the weary traveler. Here in Taos, tourists can stay in an array of accommodations, including yurts, campers, Earthships and more. Here are three good options for visitors looking for an authentic and memorable stay in Taos — one quaint, one historic and one luxe.
[QUAINT]
Casa Gallina
This off-the-beaten-path inn, surrounded by mountains, features an acequia that flows serenely through the middle of the property of Casa Gallina (Hen House).
The inn is comprised of four casitas, two of which are traditional 120-year-old adobes. Artworks for sale by local artists accentuate the home-like atmosphere of guests’ 1-, 2- or 3-bedroom spaces.
Each casita features private bathrooms, fully equipped kitchens, fireplaces (except for one with a wood stove) and private patios. The lush surrounding gardens and orchards provide farm-to-table food for guests.
As the name suggests, Casa Gallina also features dozens of hens promenading in enclosed chicken coops — providing fresh eggs for morning omelets. At night, guests are invited to sit outside at wooden tables and lawn chairs to gaze at star-studded skies.

[HISTORIC]
The Sagebrush Inn
Although changes have been made to accommodate the many visitors who are looking for a taste of old-world Taos charm, The Sagebrush Inn remains virtually untouched and continues to thrive as Taos’ first hotel.
The main room and dining area are filled with paintings from Taos masters and contemporary Southwest artists, tapestries, Western artifacts and memorabilia that pay tribute to the history that has become synonymous with sophistication tinged with old-world charm and hospitality.
The restaurant features a medley of flavorful Mexican, Northern New Mexican and American foods. After a sumptuous dinner, join the locals in the bar — two-stepping to Dixie, bluegrass and country western local musicians. Then, surrender to blissful sleep in rooms steeped in authentic Southwestern style.

[LUXE]

After a day of world-class skiing in fresh mountain air, enjoy dinner at 192, whose dining room is centered around a warm fireplace and features sumptuous Northern Italian fare. The nearby Bavarian is a trip straight to Germany, with beer, pretzels, sausages and more.
